Thanksgiving is near!

Thanksgiving 2013 is upon us. But the familiar table setting we're looking forward to are a far cry from those of the original holiday. In 1621, the year of the first feast between the Native Americans and English settlers, for three days, the English and native men, women, and children ate together. The meal consisted of deer, corn, shellfish, and roasted meat, far from today's traditional Thanksgiving feast.

They played ball games, sang, and danced. Much of what most modern Americans eat on Thanksgiving was not available in 1621.

A-1 Home Care wants you to have a wonderful and filling Thanksgiving holiday. We are a nonmedical home health agency offering in home care for elders during Thanksgiving vacations and sleepaways. Our non-medical home care agency specializes in Senior CarePersonal Services and Post Stroke Recovery for seniors and elderly living in Santa Monica, Culver City,BrentwoodMarina Del Rey, Los Angeles County and Orange County.

The government shutdown in a simple breakdown

With the looking government shutdown now a three day fact, many Americans are left wondering: how will this affect me? Seniors and elderly in Santa Monica need not worry; all services deemed "essential" are still scheduled to run smoothly. This includes the Us Postal Service, Social Security, and Veterans Benefits.

However, there are a number of services that affect the elderly community that will change due to the partial government shutdown. We've created a handy map that may clarify the situation for our readers:

1. SOCIAL SECURITY Benefit payments will still be distributed on schedule for elders and adults receiving Social Security, SSI and Veterans Pension.

2. MEDICAID: Services will proceed as usual, but disability advocates are afraid that shutdown can lead to payment delays.

3. HOUSING: Funding to local housing agencies will not be provided further, according to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

4. DISABILITY RIGHTS ENFORCEMENT: The US Department of Justice says that civil litigation, which includes the enforcement of disability rights laws, will be "curtailed or postponed".

A-1 Home Care offers free conseling for elders considering applying for Veterans Pension or Aid and Attendance Benefit. If you are a vet or widow who has served at least one day of a 90 day service in active wartime duty, do not hesitate to call us!
A-1 Home Care provides services in Santa Monica, Marina Del Ray, Brentwood, Culver City, and others around Los Angeles County.
