Santa Monica Round the Clock Care/ Tips to ward off boredom and listlessness

According to the National Institute on Aging, boredom and depression can lead to forgetfulness. The American Academy of Family Physicians points to inactivity as one of the reasons many elderly fail to thrive. So how do you interact with a senior who is no longer working, perhaps of limited ability and prone to depression?

There are several ways to accomplish this, including:

  • Encourage parents to listen to books on tape or CD
  •
  • Offer selections of their favorite music to keep brain cells stimulated
  •
  • Encourage elders to engage in exercise classes or day trips sponsored by community park and recreation departments
  •
  • Suggest your parents purchase a pet: it can be a cat, dog, bird, fish, turtle or hamster (limit pets to those your parents are capable of caring for)
  •
  • Encourage your parents to volunteer in various community activities or programs

Studies have shown that light exercise for seniors is fabulous for mental health and mobility issues. Exercise for seniors promotes higher spirits and allows social interaction that wouldn't have otherwise been open.

Thanksgiving is near!

Thanksgiving 2013 is upon us. But the familiar table setting we're looking forward to are a far cry from those of the original holiday. In 1621, the year of the first feast between the Native Americans and English settlers, for three days, the English and native men, women, and children ate together. The meal consisted of deer, corn, shellfish, and roasted meat, far from today's traditional Thanksgiving feast.

They played ball games, sang, and danced. Much of what most modern Americans eat on Thanksgiving was not available in 1621.

A-1 Home Care wants you to have a wonderful and filling Thanksgiving holiday. We are a nonmedical home health agency offering in home care for elders during Thanksgiving vacations and sleepaways. Our non-medical home care agency specializes in Senior CarePersonal Services and Post Stroke Recovery for seniors and elderly living in Santa Monica, Culver City,BrentwoodMarina Del Rey, Los Angeles County and Orange County.

The government shutdown in a simple breakdown

With the looking government shutdown now a three day fact, many Americans are left wondering: how will this affect me? Seniors and elderly in Santa Monica need not worry; all services deemed "essential" are still scheduled to run smoothly. This includes the Us Postal Service, Social Security, and Veterans Benefits.

However, there are a number of services that affect the elderly community that will change due to the partial government shutdown. We've created a handy map that may clarify the situation for our readers:

1. SOCIAL SECURITY Benefit payments will still be distributed on schedule for elders and adults receiving Social Security, SSI and Veterans Pension.

2. MEDICAID: Services will proceed as usual, but disability advocates are afraid that shutdown can lead to payment delays.

3. HOUSING: Funding to local housing agencies will not be provided further, according to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

4. DISABILITY RIGHTS ENFORCEMENT: The US Department of Justice says that civil litigation, which includes the enforcement of disability rights laws, will be "curtailed or postponed".

A-1 Home Care offers free conseling for elders considering applying for Veterans Pension or Aid and Attendance Benefit. If you are a vet or widow who has served at least one day of a 90 day service in active wartime duty, do not hesitate to call us!
A-1 Home Care provides services in Santa Monica, Marina Del Ray, Brentwood, Culver City, and others around Los Angeles County.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis, which causes damage to the joint's cartilage. when cartilage breaks down, this causes pain because bones directly contact bone. Elders suffering from advanced arthritis should seek a caregiver to assist them with difficult daily tasks. Make sure you take care of your body with strengthening exercises, good nutrition and adequate rest.

Live In Care in Santa Monica

Depression is a very misunderstood condition that affects millions of Americans every year. While it isn't exactly easy to talk about, there's a lot you can do when in the dumps. First of all, it's important to realize that depression is a medical condition like cancer or diabetes, which manifests in actual physical and psychological changes. Depression is twice as common in women, possibly for the dramatic hormone changes that occur post pregnancy and during menopause. In addition, being blue may be an indicator (but not always) of Alzheimer's. If you are experiencing symptoms of depression, please consider yourself and consult a doctor.

A-1 Home Care provides 24 Hour Home Care in Santa Monica. We have worked with elders experiencing depression from loss, medication side effects and other factors. Our gentle caregivers can support your loved one with one on one conversations, scheduling doctor's appointments and cooking healthy meals.
