The government shutdown in a simple breakdown

With the looking government shutdown now a three day fact, many Americans are left wondering: how will this affect me? Seniors and elderly in Santa Monica need not worry; all services deemed "essential" are still scheduled to run smoothly. This includes the Us Postal Service, Social Security, and Veterans Benefits.

However, there are a number of services that affect the elderly community that will change due to the partial government shutdown. We've created a handy map that may clarify the situation for our readers:

1. SOCIAL SECURITY Benefit payments will still be distributed on schedule for elders and adults receiving Social Security, SSI and Veterans Pension.

2. MEDICAID: Services will proceed as usual, but disability advocates are afraid that shutdown can lead to payment delays.

3. HOUSING: Funding to local housing agencies will not be provided further, according to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

4. DISABILITY RIGHTS ENFORCEMENT: The US Department of Justice says that civil litigation, which includes the enforcement of disability rights laws, will be "curtailed or postponed".
